California Arbor Week and National Arbor Day Celebrations!

February 24, 2016

Thanks to the passion and gusto of a tree-lover named J. Sterling Morton, Arbor Day was first celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872 by planting an estimated one million trees! Since its conception in the 1800’s, Arbor Day has been celebrated around the nation as a day to plant and care for trees.

National Arbor Day is observed on the last Friday in April; however, a number of states honor Arbor Day at other times in the spring season to coincide with prime tree planting periods. California’s Arbor Day is celebrated on March 7, in honor of famed horticulturist Luther Burbanks’s birthday – and because this date is typically ideal for planting trees in most areas of California.

California ReLeaf, in partnership with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, is celebrating Arbor Day for a whole week by encouraging cities, organizations, and schools to honor the observance by planting trees in their communities and celebrating the value of trees. California Arbor Week runs from March 7 – 14.
