2018 California Arbor Week Celebrations!

February 1, 2018

Thanks to the passion and gusto of a tree-lover named J. Sterling Morton, Arbor Day was first celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872 by planting an estimated one million trees! Since its inception in the 1800’s, Arbor Day has been celebrated around the nation as a day to plant and care for trees.

National Arbor Day is observed on the last Friday in April; however, a number of states honor Arbor Day at other times in the spring season to coincide with prime tree planting periods. California’s Arbor Day is celebrated on March 7, in honor of famed horticulturist Luther Burbank’s birthday – it also happens to be our anniversary. This year we turn 36!

There are many ways to show your love for our community's canopy this arbor day:

California ReLeaf, in partnership with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, celebrates Arbor Day for a whole week by encouraging cities, organizations, and schools to honor the observance by planting trees in their communities and celebrating the value of trees.

California Arbor Week runs from March 7 until March 14. Get involved by entering into their video and poster contest. This year’s Arbor Week Contest theme is Healthy Trees, Healthy Me! All contest entries must be submitted by February 14, 2018. Learn more by visiting arborweek.org.

Sacramento Tree Foundation and our various tree-centric partner organizations have a number of Arbor celebrations on the calendar this year in the Sacramento region. Don’t miss the chance to become involved in this deep-rooted holiday honoring our trees!

Sacramento's premier screening of Felled, a documentary film about giving new life to fallen urban trees.

In collaboration with Urban, Salvaged, Reclaimed Woods Inc., we bring you Felled, a documentary film about giving new life to fallen urban trees. Felled, much like the Tree Foundation's new Urban Wood Rescue program, seeks to inspire others to reimagine the world around them and see the value of creating something meaningful from trees that would otherwise decompose in a landfill.

This event is at the Tower Theatre on Tuesday, March 6 from 6:30 until 8:30 pm. Click here to reserve your tickets today!

Saturday, March 10

Rancho Cordova's Arbor Week Planting

Come join the City of Rancho Cordova, the Sacramento Tree Foundation, and the Cordova Recreation and Park District as we plant 118 trees, 15 of which will be dedicated to honor the City of Rancho Cordova’s 15th Anniversary. Sign up to volunteer.

Woodland Tree Foundation Arbor Day Celebration

100 trees will be planted at Beamer Park to celebrate the community's tree heritage. Join the party!
