Students growing oaks for Wine Country
Since Sacramento’s acorn crop was smaller than usual last fall, our harvest volunteers went all the way to the Bay Area. This turn of events proved especially serendipitous when the Wine Country fires broke out several weeks later. Read about how 3rd and 4th graders are growing seedlings to help us reforest these woodlands.

Beginning in mid-September, Sacramento Tree Foundation staff, interns, and volunteers were busy locating, learning about, and carefully harvesting this years nuts that will become next years seedling trees. Because of everyone’s hard work we met or exceeded most of our goals during this challenging harvesting season.

The acorn harvest is coming to a close early here on the valley floor. Beginning in mid-September, Sacramento Tree Foundation staff, interns, and volunteers have been busy locating, learning about, and carefully harvesting this year’s nuts that will become next year’s seedling trees. So far 4,500 acorns have been collected — and our volunteers will keep collecting to reach our goal of 5,000!
