Ginkgo
Ginkgo biloba 'Autumn Gold' or 'Saratoga'

These trees are well-known for their unique fan-shaped leaves that turn an iconic golden color in the fall. This species has continually existed on earth since the time of dinosaurs, causing some to call it a living fossil. The ginkgo tree has lasted so long because it is exceptionally hardy and resistant to insects and diseases - traits we admire in it today. Although this tree grows slowly, it makes a great shade tree once mature. Both of these cultivars are male clones and do not produce fruit. Availability of cultivars varies seasonally; ask you forester which is available now. The 'Autumn Gold' ginkgo grows to 45-50 feet tall and has broad, fan-shaped leaves. The 'Saratoga' ginkgo grows to about 40 feet tall, grows slightly faster, and has weeping fishtail-shaped leaves that are a lighter green in the summertime. Both have brilliant gold fall color.
