Fig
Ficus carica

The fig tree is a unique, broad-leafed tree known for its sweet fruit. Some varieties produce fruit in the fall, while others will also produce a smaller summer crop. Fig trees can grow quite large, offering plenty of shade, but their size can be a drawback in smaller spaces. They need moderate water and thrive in well-drained soil. The roots can be aggressive, so give them ample distance from buildings and hardscape. Be sure to clean up any fallen fruit to avoid issues with pests. Varieties will vary; currently 'Black Mission' is available - this variety produces dark fruit with red flesh and has both a fall crop and a summer Breba crop.
