We are so excited to announce the winners of our first round of South Sacramento NeighborWoods community grants! We are putting cash in the hands of residents and community groups because we know that the people who live, work and play in South Sacramento are most knowledgeable about how to grow a full and healthy tree canopy in their community. It is an honor to work with and support these TREE-mendous grant recipients in their vision and leadership towards a greener, healthier South Sac.

We’ll share more details about these recipients and their projects, but for now, please join us in congratulating these individuals and organizations: 

Mini-grant recipients

Annalisa Alvarado is a resident who will install automatic water-efficient irrigation for shade trees at her home and reach out to her neighbors in Parkway Estates about the importance of trees in a campaign called Beautifying our Community. Parkway Estates is a neighborhood near a freeway with very little tree canopy coverage that can offset the air pollution from vehicles. 

Dominic Allamano is a fruit tree expert who will provide pruning, soil biology enhancement, and education/mentoring for previous South Sac NeighborWoods fruit tree recipients and community organizations with mature fruit trees.

Asian Resources, Inc.  is a non-profit community-based organization established in 1980 dedicated to providing multiple social services needed in our community, empowering everyone they serve to become a vital part of our changing, diverse society. They will install water-efficient irrigation and plant new shade trees on their community center campus.

United Latinos is a community organization with a mission to develop and empower community leaders to achieve an informed and healthy community by promoting civic engagement through advocacy and education to improve the quality of life. They will form the United Latinos Green Team of 10 individuals and train them in community organizing. Once trained, the Green Team will plan tree planting events and perform air quality assessments in South Sacramento.

The South Sacramento Christian Center is a church that has provided a range of services needed in the community since 1988. They will install water-efficient irrigation at their campus and at the Simmons Community Center to care for trees on their campus and allow for the planting of new trees.
