Sacramento Tree Foundation privacy policy
The Sacramento Tree Foundation strongly believes in protecting the integrity and privacy of personal information gathered from our supporters and visitors to our websites. Since the protection of your privacy is of the greatest importance to us, we have created this privacy policy to communicate our practices regarding the collection and dissemination of personal information that can be linked to a specific individual, such as a name, address, phone number, email address, social media profile information, or any other information provided to us by users and website visitors.
You do not have to share personally identifiable information to use the Sacramento Tree Foundation website, and Sacramento Tree Foundation does not collect personally identifiable information about people without their consent. However, please be aware that our website links to a limited number of other websites, and the Sacramento Tree Foundation cannot control (and is not responsible for) the content or the privacy policies of those websites.
Information we collect
The Sacramento Tree Foundation only collects information and has access to information that users voluntarily give via email or other direct contact. We gather contact information when you contribute to the Sacramento Tree Foundation online or via mail, sign up for services or an event, purchase merchandise, sign-up for our newsletter, complete a survey or contact form, or contact us by email and/or phone. We use this information to send you updates, information about Sacramento Tree Foundation programs, events and activities, local volunteer opportunities, and giving appeals.
The Sacramento Tree Foundation also uses information gathered via the Sacramento Tree Foundation website to improve our web-based services. For each visitor to our website, our web servers automatically recognize only the visitor's IP address, domain name, browser and device type, and referring site, but not personally identifiable information. We use cookies, data caches, and other similar technologies to identify your browser or device and identify repeat visitors, in order to improve access to our website and enhance overall user experience. The Sacramento Tree Foundation periodically performs statistical analyses of aggregate user behavior and characteristics in order to measure interest in and use of various areas on our website and uses such information to improve the website and better serve our users.
In limited cases such as the use of contact forms, data and story submission surveys, or other interactive web apps, users may be invited to share their name and contact information and/or device locations and/or grant camera/photo album access to upload photos. These permissions are opt-in and can be revoked by the user at any time. Individual forms and surveys expressly state whether any data submitted will be publicly viewable, for example, in the Save the Elms Program monitoring web app where tree locations, photos, and names submitted by users are publicly viewable.
The Sacramento Tree Foundation is the sole owner of all personally identifiable information it collects. We will not sell or rent your information to anyone. We will never share your personal information with any third party outside of our organization other than as necessary to fulfill specific requests, actions, or program requirements. This can relate to Sacramento Tree Foundation activities for external processing (e.g. send posted mail, ship an order, process credit cards transactions, reserve event space, etc.) or relate to specific programs where it is necessary to share your information with partners or other third parties in order to fulfill requests you have made of the Sacramento Tree Foundation (e.g. deliver trees requested through our Sacramento Shade program, register for an event sponsored by a third party, etc.). We do not authorize any third party to retain, share, store or use personally identifiable information for any secondary purposes beyond fulfilling specific Sacramento Tree Foundation operational activities.
How we use information we collect
The Sacramento Tree Foundation uses the personal information we collect to send you updates, information about Sacramento Tree Foundation programs, events and activities, local volunteer opportunities, and giving appeals. After sharing your personal information with the Sacramento Tree Foundation, you may be contacted by any of the contact information you provide (e.g. email, phone, fax, posted mail).
You will only receive email from us if you have a) expressly signed up to receive emails, b) taken an action with the Sacramento Tree Foundation either online or in person (e.g. a contribution, survey, newsletter sign-up, program participation, event sign-up); and/or c) have been invited to sign-up to receive Sacramento Tree Foundation emails.
Additionally, in order to provide you with better and more relevant information, we analyze information about email response, website usage, and service requests to perform periodic data analyses. This information helps us to better understand our users’ usage patterns and what types of content and information may help improve user experience and customer service on the Sacramento Tree Foundation website and related online platforms.
Finally, data and photos submitted through some forms and surveys may be shared publicly if you opt in to allowing this data to be shared. For example, stories of tree traditions and corresponding photos may be shared on a public web app if you mark a box to expressly consent to us sharing this data.
Embedded content from other websites
Pages on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Do not track
The Sacramento Tree Foundation does not track its web visitors over time and across third party websites to provide targeted advertising and therefore does not respond to Do Not Track (DNT) signals. However, some third party sites do keep track of your browsing activities when they serve you content, which enables them to tailor what they present to you. If you are visiting such sites, certain browsers allow you to set the DNT signal so third parties (particularly advertisers) know you do not want to be tracked.
Third parties that have content embedded on the Sacramento Tree Foundation's websites such as a social feature may set cookies on a user's browser and/or obtain information about the fact that a web browser visited a specific Sacramento Tree Foundation website from a certain IP address. Third parties cannot collect any other personally identifiable information from the Sacramento Tree Foundation's websites unless you provide it to them directly.
What third parties we receive data from
We partner with various entities who refer users to our programs and services. When our services are requested through a third party including but not limited to SMUD, the City of Rancho Cordova, the City of Folsom, or Giving Edge, those entities provide us with personal and contact information pertinent to the services requested. We treat this data the same as all other data we collect to ensure your privacy.
Information security
We take precautions to protect your personal information, both online and offline. Only Sacramento Tree Foundation employees who need information to perform a specific job (e.g. gifts processing or customer service) are granted access to personally identifiable information. The computers/servers in which we store personally identifiable information are kept in a secure environment. Wherever we collect sensitive information (such as credit card data), that information is encrypted and transmitted in a secure way. You can verify this by looking for a closed lock icon in the URL bar or bottom of your browser, or looking for “https” at the beginning of the address of the web page (as evident on all our transaction and other web pages).
What rights you have over your data
You have a choice about how we use your personal information to communicate with you, and you may opt out at any time by unsubscribing, updating your preferences, or contacting us for assistance. If you have submitted information through this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
