Most of us know how to care for ourselves when the intense heat rolls in: find a shady spot to hang our favorite hammock for a nap, lather on the sunscreen, and drink plenty of water. But do you know how to prevent the trees in your yard from experiencing summer heat stress? It’s important to know how to take care of our leafy friends during the hot summer months and what you can do when you notice signs of distress.

What can I do to prevent heat stress?

Water regularly

Just like people, it’s important for trees to stay hydrated in the heat! Did you know that when using water wise irrigation methods trees are exempt from most state and local watering restrictions and schedules? They’re way too valuable a resource to lose! Check out this map to learn more about watering guidelines for your property.

Factors like tree species and age will determine just how much and how often you should water your tree. Most mature trees need deep watering once a month when the weather is dry, while young trees will need to be watered more frequently. Trees younger than 5 years old are most at risk during the hot summer months. Download our printable guide for water wise tree care to learn how to care for the leafy friends in your yard.

Mulch madness!

Just like sunscreen protects our skin from the intense summer sun, adding natural wood chip mulch around your tree will also protect roots from extreme temperatures and keep moisture in the soil. It will also save you money by preventing water runoff. Remember, not all mulch is created equal: decomposed granite, weed block fabric, and artificial turf will increase water runoff and trap heat in the soil. These should not be placed around trees. The best mulch for your tree, a natural wood chip mulch, is usually free of charge! Smaller amounts of mulch can be picked up from SMUD. You can also contact a local tree care company or ChipDrop to ask about delivery of an entire truckload.

Looking to create more shade in your yard? Plant climate-ready tree species

While all trees are susceptible to heat stress, we recommend planting climate-ready trees that are best adapted to Sacramento’s intense summer heat. Did you know that SMUD customers get free trees and a siting consultation to help choose which trees will thrive in their yard? Customers who sign up now should receive their trees by the fall when planting season begins.

Have more questions? Ask an arborist

One of the best ways to ensure the best care for your mature tree is by hiring an arborist. While the Sacramento Tree Foundation does not endorse any private arborists, tree care companies, or consultants, we’ve compiled a list of tips on hiring a certified or consulting arborist.
