Sawleaf zelkova
Zelkova serrata
This tree is a consistent element of Sacramento’s canopy – once you recognize it, you see them everywhere. The zelkova is a reliable large shade tree that is sought after for its quick growth and wide vase-like canopy shape. It is hardy and adaptable enough to thrive in a variety of conditions, from planting strips to lawns and everything in between. Sawleaf zelkovas are also popular because they are not messy, other than shedding small leaves in the fall. They are eager to grow and can grow as fast as 3 feet per year in a variety of conditions. May be the species zelkova or the 'Village Green' cultivar.
