Shumard oak
Quercus shumardii

The Southern red oak, also known as the Shumard oak, is a large shade tree that grows moderately fast and makes a great addition to any large landscape with its lovely rounded form and strong branch structure. It reaches mature heights of roughly 70 feet and tolerates a wide variety of soils, including hardpan and soil with heavy clay content. The Shumard oak’s attractively lobed leaves turn a deep, rusty red color in the fall, and then some of them tend to hang on to their branches throughout the winter, which creates a unique winter time appearance.
