Willow oak
Quercus phellos
The elegant willow oak is easily identified by its slender, willow-like leaves. This tree is prized for its hardiness--while it is fairly drought-tolerant once mature, it can also handle occasional flooding or more moist soil conditions. It tends to grow in a distinct pyramidal shape when young but softens into a lovely rounded canopy when older. Because the willow oak does not tend to produce as many acorns as other oaks in this area, it is a tidy tree that provides the shade of a large tree without much mess.
