Volun-CHEERS for a successful 2023-24 planting season!

June 4, 2024

Each year, from October through April when the weather is most suitable to plant young trees, the Sacramento Tree Foundation hosts volunteer tree planting events throughout the region. Thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of our dedicated volunteers and supporters, we wrapped up another tree-mendous planting season!

Since last fall, the Tree Foundation has hosted 21 planting events across the region. Over 500 volunteers  got their hands dirty with us to plant more than 600 young trees and seedlings across the Sacramento area. Nearly 150 of these volunteers worked alongside SacTree staff to plant native oaks as part of our reforestation program. Our dedicated volunteers picked up their shovels in under-canopied neighborhoods in Del Paso Heights, the River District, North Highlands, and South Sacramento while also supporting planting efforts throughout Folsom, Elk Grove, and Rancho Cordova. Volunteers worked directly with community leaders in Hollywood Park, River Park, and Tahoe Park to add more trees to their neighborhoods.

Volunteer Coordinator Justin Rubio, Volunteer Captain Matthew Tran, and Tree Foundation’s Executive Director Jessica Sanders were all smiles at the 2024 DOVIA Volunteer Awards

This May, we celebrated the achievements of our dedicated volunteers at the Tree Foundation. SacTree’s Volunteer Coordinator, Justin Rubio, was nominated for Volunteer Manager of the Year by Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA) Sacramento! Volunteer Captain, Matthew Tran was also nominated for Individual Volunteer of the Year and high school volunteer, Maximus was nominated for Youth Volunteer of the Year. We want to thank our amazing volunteers—from our newest recruits to our seasoned tree-planting veterans and volunteer captains—your commitment propels us towards a greener, more vibrant future.

While planting events slow down during warm summer months, keep an eye out for volunteer tree care events, workshops, and other opportunities to strengthen our urban forest and our region’s communities as we begin preparations for the next planting season.
