Parks, schools, community centers, and residential front yards are great places for community tree plantings. Other sites may be approved on a case-by-case basis but must be accessible to the public. For individual homes, businesses, and other private properties, please sign up at sactree.org/freetrees.

Our goal is to provide every community planting with the support required for it to succeed. We typically get more requests for plantings than our capacity to organize, but we can provide trees, tools, and training to partners who are able to organize their own events. Either way, submit an application to help us determine the needs for your project.

For a full planting event, it can take 3-6 months of planning, but this can vary greatly depending on the level of support needed. Some parks and school districts have lengthy approval applications that can take months. If you reach out to us well in advance of your date, we can help navigate these obstacles.

Trees grow best when planted during the cooler and wetter months of the year, from October through May. It is possible to plant trees at other times, but the level of care and irrigation needed will be higher. For public spaces, this level of care may not be realistic. Summer is a great time to organize for the coming season, or take care of existing trees.

We offer nearly 40 species of trees that grow well in the Sacramento region and are suitable to grow near homes and buildings. Our selection includes a variety of mature sizes, growth rates, water needs, flowers, fall color, and deciduous and evergreen varieties. 5 species of native trees are also available. Yes, our community arborist will work with you to determine which types of trees from our list of available varieties will thrive in your space. We take into account factors like soil type, irrigation setup, sun exposure, and proximity to buildings, concrete, power lines, underground utilities, or other trees. Availability of certain species may vary seasonally.

For private property, we offer trees in #5 pots that are between 3-6 feet tall. They are much easier to plant than larger trees, and because they have spent less time in a pot before getting planted, they get established quicker and easily catch up to larger potted trees.

For public spaces like parks, we sometimes provide trees in #15 containers since they often have to withstand landscaping crews, pedestrian traffic, and sometimes even a stray ball.
